ABOUT FULL MOON POETS

Full Moon Poets was founded in 2000 by Danny Salzhandler, a local artist in Encinitas, California.  His vision was to have a gathering of local poets meet once a month in an informal setting to read poetry.

His dream was realized and Full Moon Poets, in conjunction with 101 Artists' Colony produces 2  poetry slams per year at the La Paloma Theatre, attracting poets from across the country, and standing room only crowds of 400 people. Volunteers are always needed to help sign in poets and scorekeeping. The event is free, but the popcorn bucket is passed around to collect prize money for the winning poets. Rent for the La Paloma is typically paid by donations from the Full Moon Poets, 101 Artists' Colony, and solicitations from local businesses and merchants.

In the past, Full Moon Poets Open Readings were held monthly on the full moon at the 101 Artists' Colony for a "poetry circle" - an open reading with poets of all ages and walks of life.  These monthly open readings typically bring 20-30 poets and guests. Since the closure of the 101 Artists' Colony, various venues and dates for Open Readings have created a less consistent schedule, but dates will be posted as they are known.
