Full
Moon Poets presents two poetry slams per year, one in the summer
and one in the fall.
This is the largest
venue for Poetry Slams in San Diego county although the Slam event
is not limited to San Diego county poets, all poets are invited.
What is a
Poetry Slam?
A
Poetry Slam is a contest in which poets compete for a first place
cash prize as well as second and third place prizes. The
Slam consists of three rounds in which the poet has three minutes
to present one of his/her original poems of any style. After the
first round six poets with the highest scores move on to round
two in which they read another poem. Then the three poets
who emerge with the top scores move on to the final round and
must read another poem to determine who will get 1st, 2nd, and
3rd place.
The
audience plays a vital role in the poetry Slam as well.
Slam spectators are encouraged to cheer, clap, jeer and boo at
the poets and at the scores earned, the louder the better.
Open
to the public and most importantly, open to any and all persons
who wish to compete. The Slam will consist of 17 poets.
The doors will open at 6:00 sharp. All poets waiting will
be let in and the doors will close. In the event that there
are more than 17 poets (probable) we will draw names and the first
17 names drawn will compete in the Slam. Plan to have fun
even if you don't get on stage!
Each
poet who wishes to participate will need to have 3 poems to read
for 3 elimination rounds. Poets have three minutes to read or
perform an original creation and
points will be deducted for exceeding the time limit. Poets
may not use pre-recorded music/instruments, costumes or
props. Five judges who have
been randomly selected from the audience will score each of the
poets on a scale of 1 to 10. Judges are asked to consider
both the performance and the craft of the poem. The scores
will then be tallied.
The
first place prize is a cash prize and second and third place prizes
will be announced at the Slam.
The Slam begins at 7 PM and is free to the public as well as poets.
